To those who know me and to those who don’t…some things you may not know about my life.
Staying fit since the age of 14 wasn't always easy...but a necessity. Having a grandmother and mother stricken with diabetes, staying healthy was not optional for me, it was essential for life.
I started with my brother’s weight set when I was fourteen, and I fell in love. This coupled with Karate and running kept me fit. After I had my child, I immediately began a regimen of skipping rope and weightlifting again. The pounds dropped off quickly and I was back into a size smaller than before I was pregnant.
At the age of 37 I tore a thigh muscle and I ended up with a blood clot that ran the full length of my left leg. I couldn’t walk and was in bed in the hospital for a month. At one point my blood pressure dropped and I died. They brought me back and the doctors told me I’d never walk again; that’s if I ever went home from the hospital. I was in bad shape. The blood thinners weren’t working on me due to my vegetarian and bodybuilding lifestyle. I finally stabilized after a month and they sent me home on crutches, in pain, and unable to walk much less put any weight on my leg. It was like someone stuck a dead tree limb into my hip socket.
Weeks went by and I was devastated. The doctors told me there was nothing they could do. I began to research different vitamins, mineral and supplements, along with inner-body strengthening such as self-hypnosis and mostly WILL-POWER! I started a cocktail of numerous amino acids, Coenzyme Q10 and other things for circulations and regrowth of tissue…and I prayed and told my inner-self that I WAS going to walk again. About two weeks went by. I was sitting on the couch thinking, “foot, move!”….my toes kind of jumped. I was ecstatic!
I continued believing in myself, until one day I went into the doctor’s office on crutches, and threw them down in front of him and started to walk. He deemed it a miracle; I deemed it will power and not saying I can’t to anything!
It took me about a year to get back to walking, much longer for working out. But here I am, age 49 and I kick box, exercise and I can do more than most people half my age. I can only contribute my health to my diet, exercise and will power.
Throughout the years I have eaten a vegetarian diet and maintained a healthy lifestyle. It has worked out to my advantage: low blood pressure, low cholesterol counts, low sugars and the heart rate of a marathon runner. Working out, with my clean diet keeps my levels high and my zest for fitness has never ceased.
I am looking forward to being in my 50’s and beyond and lifting those same weights I have had for so many years, and working out like a lunatic, (as my friends say).
